Search Engine Optimization

Why should you do search engine optimization on your website and what is seo anyways ?

The fact is that Google which is the largest search engine on the
world wide web is who you should cater to when thinking of doing
search engine optimization on your website and/or blog.

Using the right seo strategy, search engine optimization and making your website/blog seo friendly is essential to improving your website ranking and getting your website in front of people searching for your specific niche or market.

The best way to make the best of seo is to start your seo strategy
from the minute you think of build a website or blog by doing some
market research on the market you intend to build your site for.

Search Engine Optimization
Google SEO Guide

Here are some SEO TIPS to follow:

  • When starting a website the first thing that people will be find is
the title of your website and the meta description describing what
    your website is about.

Google says; Create unique, accurate page titles. Your title should tell the reader what your website is about and include your primary keyword and should give the reader a solution they are searching for. It not only makes it relevant to the reader when searching on their web browser but it gives search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing etc… relevant information to make your website show up in their search results.

In the image below you will see when someone does a search on Google for baseball cards and below that you will notice the search results by Google. Not only is Brandon creating a brand for himself but is optimizing the use of Title Tags and Meta Tags on his website to show up on Google search results.

SEO Friendly Title Tags Meta Tags

  • Meta Tags – This is where the description of your site should be
poured on as accurately as possible and give your visitor a reason
why they should keep reading and searching your content for a
solution which solves their problem. And you have only 140
characters to do it with because the rest will not show up on the
search results. Do a search in Google browser and see how many
words shows up in the search results after the website link. So, pick
your words selectively and accurately to make the visitor want to
    visit your website or blog.
  • Research your niche to see if there is a market for your topic or
product by going to google search and typing in your main keyword
to see who your competition is and what are they writing about,
talking about and what keywords they are targeting and using in
    their content.

For Example: If ( Best Tasting Water ) is your keyword, then what is your market searching for ? They are searching for water filters, how to purify water, or are they looking for spring water or are they looking for a water bottle which is bpa free ? Maybe your primary keyword should be ( The Best Water Filtration Systems Online ) or ( The Best BPA Free Water Bottles ).

  • Use Google Keyword Planner to find the best keywords associated with your niche or market.
  • Visit your competitors website and spend some time going
through each of them to see what is working and what isn’t. They
are in the top search results for a reason, they have done their
research and have search engine optimized their websites properly. They’ve already done the hard work for you so why not capitalize and copy what they are doing.

Tip: Don’t copy verbatim what they are doing but put it in your own words and make it unique and do it better then their website.

  • Your site structure – Make sure that your URL is seo friendly. For
Example; This is the wrong url configuration: (http://mywebsite.com/1968703) and here is the right url configuration (http://mywebsite.com/the-best-psa-free-water-bottles ), if you use WordPress then all you have to do is set the Permalinks to Post Name or Custom – /%postname%/. Another important factor of improving the site structure is making your website easier to navigate so your readers can easily find what they are looking for.
  • Website ContentThe quality of your content will dictate whether your readers and visitors will continue to come back and visit your site in the future or even purchase anything from you. Yep! That is all in a nutshell what quality content will and will not do for you as a blogger or entrepreneur.

If you provide quality content that gives your readers a solution, help them make an intelligent decision on buying a product that provides the solution they are looking for you’ve done well. When writing content for your site you should be thinking about an evergreen article that will stand the test of times, can be relevant regardless of how long you wrote it plus is so effective in its end goal that it could go viral online giving you a long term stream of traffic to your site.

  • Anchor Text on your site. What is anchor text you might be
asking ? This is when you select a word or words/phrase or a
sentence and hyperlink/linking it to an internal link like another
article on your website or another page on your website or an
external link to another website or product.
Anchor Text

Making the best use of the anchor text is critical to making that word or phrase a relevant search for your readers and more importantly for search engines as well improving your website ranking too. These seo techniques are simple but yet very effective if you use them properly.

  • Images on your website should be seo friendly as well. What I
mean is your images should be named accordingly and be relevant
to your content as well. Images should have alternate text associated with image. Most website platforms when uploading an image will ask for you to fill in the: Image Title, Alternate Text and Link you would like to send the people who click on your image. In googles eyes you score additional points for website ranking factors too.
  • Heading Tags – Normally your blog post or page title will be an
H1 Heading if not make sure that it is. Following your title is your
page or blog post content which should include your H2, H3 and
other Heading Tags. Choose them wisely, more than likely secondary keywords that are associated with your content.
  • Robots.txt – My suggestion is visit Google Webmaster sign up if
you haven’t already and connect your website with them so they
can provide you with data and analytics of your site so you can
    make improvements as necessary.

Checkout image below where you will notice Google Robot searching for specific content related to Marketing Techniques keyword. This shows you how the url is structured and why it is important to get search engine robots crawling your website.

SEO Friendly Website

  • No-Follow links – For example: If your promoting an affiliate
product make it a no-follow link when hyperlinking anchor text or
an image so search engines don’t crawl it with their robots. Or if
you don’t want certain text, content to be crawled by search
engines then make it a no-follow.
  • Mobile sites – Today if you want to have an impact on search
results then it is important that you make your site mobile ready
and compliant to make it easier for readers to view on their mobile devices. Make sure that you guide your mobile users accurately so they can have a pleasant experience with your site.
  • Promoting your website properly will have visitors engaged with
your content and will be more apt to sign up for blog updates,
register for your webinar, and even purchase your product. When
promoting make sure that your ad and ad copy is congruent with
your website and products you want them to purchase from your
website. Use the free Google Webmaster Tools and free Google Keyword Planner they make your search engine optimization a whole lot easier.
  • Your Categories on your website are important as well and should include the Primary, Secondary and Alternate keywords related to your website content your visitors are searching for.

Categories might not have a lot of ranking juice per say but making your website more optimized in every little detail gives you more leverage in the search results and besides there might be other categories your reader is interested in learning or reading about then why not give them more relevant content that keeps your readers and visitors on your site longer which improves your bounce rate and relevance in Googles eyes.

Makes sense to me, how about you, what do you think ? Let me know what you think about search engine optimization and seo tools you recommend in the comments below…thanks.

Using the most automated and effective wordpress plugins on your website is what all experienced and serious entrepreneurs use to squeeze every ounce of value and productive results.

One of the most important and effective wordpress plugins for your website is an SEO Plugin. One that helps you turn a long and tedious task of optimizing your content for much search engine love. Here are the two heavyweights in this class, Yoast SEO and All In One SEO WordPress Plugins.

Yoast SEO vs All In One SEO WordPress Plugins

As you will see below each one of these wordpress plugins have been downloaded over 23 Million times just to show you how popular these plugins are and for obvious reasons. They WORK!

I have highlighted some areas in each image indicating how many downloads and how many reviews, Last Update and Compatibility with your wordpress edition or not.

Why is this important ? Every Plugin you decide to use on your website, it should go through the same scrutiny in order to decide whether it will work for your website or not.

Build A Business On A Budget

These are important areas you should always check for:

  • Reviews – I personally like to read reviews to see what others are saying and what pros and cons there are with the plugin.
  • Downloads – Obviously if they have 23 Million downloads there is not much to think about but most plugins don’t have these many downloads and when searching for a plugin you will find others that are just as effective and will work with your website.
  • Last Update – Check to see when was the plugin last updated. In some cases you will see that the plugin might not have been updated as frequently and will not be compatible with your wordpress site version.
  • Tip: If you already have plugins installed on your wordpress website then it is important to make sure that each plugin is compatible with each other. I have found that some are not compatible with each other specially when using mobile friendly plugins. So do your due diligence…It will payoff!

There Are Thousands Of Free WordPress Plugins And Thousands More For Sale.

WordPress Plugins

So, Which one should you use on your website ? This is a question often asked by many building a WordPress website and the answer is different for each application depending on the goal your trying to achieve and what type of website or blog you are building.

If your building a blog and your goal is to rank for a specific niche content then one of the plugins I recommend for building a Google friendly website is having a plugin that helps you with your SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) like Yoast or All In One Plugins.

Here the image below is a behind the scenes look at what Yoast Plugin looks like and what benefits it is to your website.

You will notice the Title of Blog Post, the Permalink/URL to your Blog Post, the Meta Tags area and where your Focus Keyword goes.

Yoast SEO Plugin

The benefits to using a plugin like Yoast is that it not only tailors your target audience but will also help you determine if your content is reader friendly which is an SEO and ranking factor as well.

The other popular SEO Plugin is called, All In One SEO. This wordpress plugin is a simpler and easier to use than its competitor Yoast. Here below you will see its simplicity…

All In One SEO Plugin
All In One SEO WordPress Plugin

All In One SEO Plugin 2

As you noticed in image above there are places where you enter your keywords, Custom Canonical URL, Robots Meta NOINDEX, Robots Meta NOFOLLOW, Robots Meta NOODP, Robots Meta NOYDIR And Disable (All In One SEO Plugin) on this page/post.

Keywords box – is where you will input your primary keyword and your secondary keywords will go.

Custom Canonical URL – Matt Cutts explains:

Q: So how do I make sure that Google picks the url that I want?
A: One thing that helps is to pick the url that you want and use that url consistently across your entire site. For example, don’t make half of your links go to http://example.com/ and the other half go to http://www.example.com/ . Instead, pick the url you prefer and always use that format for your internal links. Read more…

Robots Meta NOINDEX – Robots Meta NoIndex means that if you check this box then when Search Engines go to crawl your website this URL will not be indexed into their data centers.

Robots Meta NOFOLLOW – Robots Meta NoFollow means that search engines will not follow this link.

Here below is an explanation of what “noydir” and “noodp” are thanks to matthewsdiehl.com

noydir Explained:

When a site is listed in the Yahoo! Directory there is a title and description associated with that listing. So, Yahoo! started showing that title and description as the linking text and snippet text in the search engine results page (SERP) whenver that website would show up (most commonly only the homepage). The noydir command overrides this functionality and gives control back to the website owner to control the linking and snippet text in the SERPs via the Title tag and Meta Description tag on their website. By regaining this control you can adjust those fields whenever desired.

noodp Explained:

The same functionality goes for the noodp command. However, this is directed at Google. Google partnered with ODP to power the Google Directory so if you website was listed in DMOZ then Google would pull that listing information as the linking and snippet text in the Google SERPs. The noodp overrides that functionality and give you control back.

Disable on this page/post – If you check this box then your page or blog post will not use your All In One SEO Plugin parameters for SEO purposes.

wordpress

Here are other wordpress plugins that I recommend using on your wordpress site and they are all Free:

  1. Askimet Plugin – Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from spam.
  2. BackWPup Plugin – WordPress Backup Plugin backs up your website in case there is a server crash or if you by mistake delete something you really need it allows you to recover lost data.
  3. Broken Link Checker – Checks your blog for broken links and missing images and notifies you on the dashboard if any broken links are found. It is important that you keep track of this as Google will penalize your site for broken links and will affect your ranking too.
  4. Google XML Sitemaps – This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.com to better index your blog. Tip: If you are using Yoast SEO WordPress Plugins it already includes Google XML Sitemaps so if you have this plugin installed it will conflict with Yoast Plugin, in this case just simply disable the plugin or deleted.
  5. Image Widget – A simple image widget that uses the native WordPress media manager to add image widgets to your site. You could also use it to place banners or pictures anywhere on your site including the side widgets.
  6. MailMunch – Increase your Email Subscribers by over 500%, Seriously! Collect email addresses from website visitors and grow your subscribers with our attention grabbing optin-forms, entry/exit intent technology, and other effective lead-generation forms like swinging exit popups. This has been one of my secrets to increasing email subscribers and clients. Very effective and highly recommended.
  7. Pinterest Pin It – A Button On Image Hover And After Post & Page Content. Pin Your WordPress Blog Posts Pages Images With Pinterest.

  10. RS FeedBurner – This plugin detects native WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner, FeedPress, or FeedBlitz feeds so you can track your subscribers.
  11. Simple Share Buttons Adder – A simple plugin that enables you to add share buttons to all of your posts and/or pages.
  12. SocialAdr – The official SocialAdr.com WordPress plugin. Automatically create bookmarks in SocialAdr for your blog posts.

No CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions, or other inconvenience to website visitors. Enjoy running a WordPress site without spam! Includes a spam-blocking contact form feature.
  15. WPtouch Mobile Plugin – First I recommend you get a mobile responsive theme for your site but if it is not mobile responsive than you can use WPTouch Mobile Plugine to make your website mobile-friendly with just a few clicks.
  16. Yoast SEO – The first true all-in-one SEO solution for WordPress, including on-page content analysis, XML sitemaps and much more. I’ve used All In One SEO Plugin and it is an awesome plugin but after using Yoast for a while even though it is a little more tedious but more powerful and effectively micromanaging my content to get the most out of each blog post and pages on my site.

These are some of the more valuable wordpress plugins I have found, tested and use on my blog site daily. There are other great wordpress plugins you could find and test on your site through the back office of your wordpress site.

Just make sure to keep them updated and as always remember to write high quality and valuable content that readers love which always trumps everything else.

Remember the image above of Yoast SEO where all the red and orange circles on the left of the Content Analysis now look at the image below after optimizing the blog post to Yoast SEO specs. You will see where all the circles are now green and have passed all parameters to make it a great seo and search engine friendly blog post.

Reverse Engineering Your Competition A Shortcut To Online Marketing…

Reverse EngineeringThis is something that eluded me in my first years of my Internet Marketing Business and it is something you could learn from.

Until not to long ago I did not understand the importance of reverse engineering my top competition. The first time I heard “Reverse Engineering Your Competition”, I believed that all you needed to do was look at a site and attempt to do the same as they are doing but the problem was, I did not know where to even start.

The difference came when I got really serious about my business and started learning from some great mentors like Mike Dillard, Tim Erway, Mike Filsaime, Shaqir Hussyin, Kelly Felix and many others along the way that really wanted to help me succeed.

Seriously, many try to make money online but the fact is that most don’t know where to start.

Reverse engineering your top competitors and their websites can provide you with the need to know on how to get n unfair advantage in your particular niche with the exception of building your site of course.

What I mean by this is, If you know what keywords are making money or ranking websites on the first page of Google/Top Search Engines in your particular niche then the majority of your market research is done because doing your market research and keyword research is about 80% of the information needed to make money online and ranking your site.

In this example below you will notice a keyword search done on Google for the phrase, ” Hats for sale “. This is what turned up on the first page of Google. You’ll see all the paid advertising for this keyword meaning that it is making money already. Watch it for a couple of days and if you still see these advertising then you know this keyword is already making money and all you have to do is find a vendor that has an affiliate program and you send traffic to your marketing funnel and make commissions.

You will also notice that below the left margin after all the Ads you will see top 10 websites competing for this keyword but doing it mostly organically. These websites can provide you with other keywords you should do some due diligence on and see if they are worth your time and efforts.

Hats for sale

Reverse engineering a competitors site not only gives you the market and keyword research information but also gives you what anchor text they are using, where are they getting their backlinks from, what meta keywords are they using on their website, are they using their keyword in their Title tags and Meta tags, and the ranking of the site.

If your competition has a blog then go checkout their blog and see what they write about, the keywords used. You could use the same keywords on your blog and content of your website.

Reverse Engineering Now you are probably wondering how you are going to get all this information.

Here are some great free tools that will help you find those keywords from your competitors and the entire Search Engine of Google:

1- aherfs.com

2- majesticseo.com

3- Alexa.com

4- SimilarWeb.com – Gives you others websites competing for the same keywords

5- marketsamurai.com ( paid )

6- Google’s Free Keyword Tool

These sites above will give you the Analytics Data and charts of keywords, anchor text, backlinks and ranking of your competitor.

Armed with this arsenal of information will put you ahead of 95% of the competition because having this information is priceless to your business success. Study all the Data and Analytics carefully and dissect SEOevery little detail and you will see how quickly you will have your site right there next to top websites in your niche.
