The purpose of how to do market research simply means building a solid foundation before you start purchasing a Domain Name or building a website or blog.
Maybe you have a story to tell, have a passion you want to share, share your views with the world, or you have a product you want to sell or you would like to help others in your field of expertise with ” how to content ” etc… or what ever your purpose is, it is not as complicated as you might think.
I’ve built many sites for my business and other clients as well. I understand what it is to navigate through the internet to find this information specially, not having to pay for it.
Define Market Research: Essentially your doing consumer research if you are selling a product!
Here are a few things you need to build a website or blog and how to do market research:
First you need a Domain Name. Not just any Domain Name but one that includes your main keyword people will search for online.
Before you go off getting a domain name you need to do some RESEARCH before you buy a Domain Name. The way you would do this is by using a free software owned by Google. Its called, Google Keyword Planner.
Why is market research important ? The same reason you would build the foundation of your house before building your house. Hope you get that. Essentially if your selling anything whether it’s your own product or doing affiliate marketing either way your doing consumer research!
You want to know where is your audience and what are they searching for and it is why using your main keyword in your Domain Name is important as well.
So, What do you do next ? Do you know how to do your market research ? No Worries.
Follow these steps below to get started:
Open up Google Keyword Planner by signing in or signing up for a Google account if you don’t have a gmail account. Once inside you will see this home page in image below…
In the image above shows you exactly where to click to open a drop-down menu where you will enter your keyword or keyword phrase you would like to research.
In the image below you will see the window open. All you have to do is type in your keyword and click, Get Ideas at the bottom of page. You will notice directly below it shows the Geo Targeting, Language and which Search Engine you would like to search on.
After you’ve input your keyword (s) in the box above you will see the next page after you click the button, ” Get Ideas ” below…
In the images above you will see what keyword phrase term I input to get the results you see. The keyword, ” how to do market research ” shows 1,300 Low competition monthly searches which according to the requirements I personally use this is a good keyword to go after and use in a domain name even though its a little long but.
Making How To Do Market Research Easier!
Would look into it in more depth by checking out the website competition on the first page of Google. Here below I did a search for, ” how to do market research “. As you can see there are about 88.6 million results for this search which mean there is a lot of competition out there.
But the competition you want to focus on is your first ten search results on Google because this is where you want to be, ” on the first page of Google ” not the second or beyond.
If you notice I use a tool called, ” SEO Quake ” its Free to use. You could use it with Google Chrome or FireFox on your PC and you also have a plugin available for mac computers as well.
What this tool does is tells me what are the websites page rankings, index, age and much more. Number one website is entrepreneur.com, they are a pretty big and well managed company website but if you keep looking at the other websites you might see an opportunity to leverage.
Marketing Research Tip : Take a look at the image below where I’ve put some boxes in key areas you need to look at.

Want to reverse engineer your competition ? ( Inside scoop on how to do market research by spying on your competition! )
Get the website” URL/Link ” and place into Google Keyword Planner in the second box below where you typed keyword to research. Once you input the website url into the box and click ” Get Ideas ” then you will see what websites are using for keywords in their content and anchor text.
Below is an example of where to get the link/url of the competitors website.
Below is an image of where to input the URL/Link into the box that says, ” Your Landing Page “.
They have basically done the research for you since they are on the first page of Google. You can also check out the website and see how much content they have and what the website looks like. Obviously they are doing something right so why re-invent the wheel and instead take all this knowledge then apply it, dissect it, learn from it ( what to do or not do ) and run with your business.
Once satisfied with your search of keywords to find the top 20 keywords then drill it down to Top 10 with your main keyword. This process requires patience and can not be rushed so take your time and do your due your diligence.
Now it’s time to get a Domain Name. You could use a name registrar like Namecheap.com or GoDaddy.com. Now you need to check and see if your Domain Name is available for purchase. If it is available then you would purchase or if not, try combining with other words like best, a color, or a stop word that complements your keyword.
Below is a peak into namecheap back office. I recently purchase these and will be doing something with them but for example you can see where to click here to manage your Domain Name.
The next page following the top image you will see an image below you would manage where your name servers are pointing to in order to find your website online. As you can see in the image below the domain name is now poiniting to 1and1 hosting dns where your WordPess website or blog is hosted.
Once you have purchased your domain name you are ready to build your website or blog. If you don’t know how to do this there are many great tutorials that will help you with installing your wordpress site, selecting the Theme for your site, selecting the Header, and setting up your opt-in box with an email autoresponder so you could stay in touch with your subscribers.
